GRAMICCI: FROM A VENTURA GARAGE TO THE STREETS OF WARSAW

Since 1982, Gramicci has been creating functional outdoor apparel. Designed for movement, loved by countless subcultures — what started in a garage in Ventura, California, reached the streets of Tokyo and beyond. Today, it's also making its way to Krucza Street in Warsaw. Gramicci

STONEMASTERS: BEFORE THE BRAND WAS BORN

To understand Gramicci, you must first understand the Stonemasters. In the 1970s, a group of counter-cultural climbers known as the Stonemasters settled in Yosemite National Park and literally reinvented climbing. They abandoned heavy gear and old methods for something faster, cleaner, more fluid. Their reference points were not other climbers, but Bruce Lee, Jimi Hendrix, and Carlos Castañeda.

One of them, Mike Graham, had a clothing problem. Painter pants and surplus military clothing worked to a certain extent, but they lacked flexibility. Graham decided to fix it. Gramicci
The solution was ingenious in its simplicity: a rhomboidal gusset taken from kung-fu pants for full 180-degree flexibility, durable canvas for granite, and an integrated nylon belt inspired by backpack straps that could be adjusted with one hand. Gramicci
The brand name also has its own story. Several Stonemasters attempted the first "Italian" ascent of the legendary Half-Dome in Yosemite, even though none of them were Italian. They invented Italian-sounding aliases, and Graham became Gramicci. The nickname stuck so much that when it came time to name the new brand, that made-up Italian word turned out to be perfect. 1982: THE BIRTH OF A BRAND

Gramicci wasn't born out of a marketing plan or lofty slogans. It was a one-man rebellion against clothing that hindered performance.

Graham transferred the gusset and cuffs from martial arts apparel to climbing pants. He gave the first collection to his friends. Word of mouth did the rest. Gripped Magazine
By 1998, REI informed Mike that Gramicci had become the number one outdoor brand in their stores. In 1999, when the company was generating $27 million in annual revenue, Graham sold the brand. But the product's DNA remained intact. Gripped Magazine

WHY GRAMICCI PANTS ARE CULT CLASSICS

Gramicci started with one product: the G-Pant. Climbing pants with a rhomboidal gusset for full range of motion and an integrated nylon belt taken from backpack straps. These pants became the foundation of everything Gramicci builds — functional apparel designed around how people move.

THE GUSSET: BORROWED FROM KUNG-FU

It's a rhomboidal insert between the legs. Taken from kung-fu pants, it provides a full 180 degrees of freedom of movement. Climbers use it on the wall. Cyclists on their bikes. The rest — simply because it's comfortable. Gramicci

INTEGRATED BELT

The nylon belt integrated into the waistband, inspired by backpack straps, allows you to adjust the pants with one hand. This practical solution became the brand's most recognizable detail. Gramicci

MATERIALS

Gramicci works with fabrics that withstand real use: organic cotton twill, stretch cotton, ripstop, and technical synthetic materials. Comfortable from day one, durable for years.

FROM YOSEMITE TO THE STREETS: CROSSOVER TO STREETWEAR

In the mid-80s, surfers and skaters in California
adapted Gramicci pants for the same reason as climbers: they were comfortable, durable, and didn't restrict movement. The transition to streetwear happened organically. Hympala Store
Suddenly, you could climb and then go to the pub in the same pants. Gramicci became a lifestyle brand overnight. Gramicci
Today, Gramicci naturally fits into several aesthetics simultaneously: gorpcore, outdoor casual, techwear, and classic streetwear. It doesn't chase trends because it sets them itself.

GRAMICCI TODAY: JAPAN AND A NEW CHAPTER

What started in a garage in Ventura, California, reached the streets of Tokyo and beyond. The brand's Japanese division actively develops new collections, experiments with fabrics and silhouettes, retaining the core of what Gramicci has been doing from the beginning.

For its 40th anniversary, the brand released the "Legacy Collection," paying homage to its roots in Yosemite's climbing culture. The collection features refreshed versions of the original G-Pant and climbing shorts with archival details. Fat Buddha Store
